Sierra Nevada 2013 Bigfoot Barleywine and Ruthless Rye IPA update:
(Chico, CA) – A quick update from Sierra Nevada Brewing Company…
Sierra Nevada Bigfoot Barleywine shipped early this year, on December 17th, according to Communications Manager, Ryan Arnold. Per Twitter reports, it arrived to some stores this week. The beer is now featured in four-packs for the first time instead of six-packs as part of the brewery’s High Altitude Series.
Sierra Nevada Ruthless Rye IPA will soon return as the brewery’s Q1 beer. A number of Untappd check-ins this past Wednesday (nearly 20) versus last Wednesday (a few) turned out to be a fluke. The 2013 edition is not out yet and the first shipment left the brewery for wholesalers on Monday, according to Arnold. It will filter out to the market over the next several weeks.
Sierra Nevada Barrel-Aged Bigfoot Barleywine, meanwhile, will make its way to bottles in late January.
BeerPulse revealed the new artwork for Ovila Abbey Quad on Wednesday. The beer will return with the new branding in February.
The brewery removed a beer release schedule from its website when it was revamped but, in case you missed it, did put up a video that went viral across the beer community.

MillerCoors picks contest winners for Miller64 30-second spots (video):
MillerCoors posted four new videos up on its Miller64 Youtube page on Friday. They are info-less but appear to be contest winners from the company’s PopTent Miller64 Resolutions campaign. PopEnts is a website that companies can use to pay individuals for creative work…sort of like 99Designs. Here is their listing:
—
We are looking to generate new content for two exciting campaign initiatives to help Miller64 get 2013 off to a fresh start! It’s up to you to choose which of the two creative options you’d like to execute on….OR if you’re feeling daring you may submit videos for both. We’ll provide you with some information behind each of these initiatives, seed your thoughts with some existing campaign elements to help get you thinking along the right lines, and ultimately turn the reins over to you to steer us in a new, exciting direction!
Option 1: “A Little Extra” – This video should be about how one might choose to do a little extra in their daily life, i.e. take the stairs versus taking the elevator. The video should incorporate leading a balanced life of being active and healthy but also having fun and being social.
Option 2: “Resolutions” – This video needs to tell us a story about resolutions for the New Year. Again, the resolutions video should also stick with the theme of leading a balanced life/being active and healthy but also having fun and being social.
We’d like to keep the same lighthearted, celebratory tone of the current campaign, but there should also be an element of being unexpected and clever incorporated (rather than slapstick funny). Videos can be :30 (or less) and should compel viewers to want to SHARE. So crack this assignment open and let your creativity flow!

BridgePort Brewing to Release
BridgePort Brewing to Release:
BridgePort Brewing Company, Oregon’s oldest craft brewery, is excited to announce its new spring seasonal beer, Smooth Ryed. The brew gets its name from a warm malt background with a hint of spicy rye character. Smooth Ryed is a full-bodied hoppy ale that uses caramel and chocolate malts combined with 10 percent malted rye. In addition, the single hop varietal that BridgePort is using in the hopjack, Centennials, will lend a citrus aroma and clean, floral notes.
“This recipe creates a smooth, solid base for a big load of hop aroma from Oregon Centennial hops. We source the malts from Great Western Malting just across the river in Vancouver and the hops from good friends at two local farms about 35 miles south of Portland,” commented brewmaster, Jeff Edgerton. “We use only Centennials in the hopjack so that the consumer will get the wonderful full flavor and aroma that only those hops have.”
Smooth Ryed will be available in all states where BridgePort is distributed starting in late December and early January.
BridgePort’s Smooth Ryed Stats:BU’s:55 ABV:6.3 Color:Mid-range Amber OG:4.8
Ingredients:NW Pale malt, rye malt, Crystal 30-37, Crystal 70-80, chocolate malt, UK Kent Golding pellets, Centennial whole leaf hops.
Description:Smooth Ryed has an appetizing mid-range amber color with an aroma that is derived from a pound per barrel of whole Centennial hops in the hopjack, kettled by UK Kent Golding pellets. Smooth Ryed is brewed with a variety of malts, including a spicy rye and chocolate malt.

An Interview with Lagunitas Founder Tony Magee
An Interview with Lagunitas Founder Tony Magee:
Lagunitas Brewing in Petaluma, CA is easily one of the fastest growing breweries in the country. Lagunitas' brand is built on classic west coast-style IPAs and non-conformist--some might say alternative and hippie--attitude. The brewery is known for once being shutdown due to pot smoking and renaming one of its beer from "Kronic" to "Censored" after the TTB's objection to the original moniker. Founder Tony Magee is one of the most down-to-earth personalities in craft beer--he's just as likely to bust out his guitar and sing a country-western tune at a meet-the-brewer event as he is to promote his own brand. The most prominent brewery owner on twitter, though he follows no one, the stream of consciousness-like output has been the cause of recent controversy, from questioning bigger brewers taking government subsidies to directly questioning Sierra Nevada and New Belgium's motivations. Not to be outdone by Sierra Nevada and New Belgium Brewing's announcements about opening east coast brewing expansions, Magee announced Lagunitas' own expansion via twitter in a typically alternative method. Lagunitas Brewing expects to sell more than 240,000 barrels this year, and by the end of 2013 another 240,000 barrels just from the company's new Chicago facility.

Full Sail Lord of Darkness Cascadian Dark Ale up next in Brewer’s Share series
Full Sail Lord of Darkness Cascadian Dark Ale up next in Brewer’s Share series:
Press Release:
(Hood River, OR) – Full Sail Brewing will release a new beer in their Brewer’s Share Experimental line up—“Lord of Darkness,” brewed by Brewer Gavin Lord, celebrates that in darkness you can find light.
Gavin’s beer is a Cascadian Dark Ale brewed with Midnight Wheat, Flaked Oats, Crystal Malts, and 2-Row Pale. Lord of Darkness pours a devilishly dark ruby and wears a lacy white crown. Beware His Amarillos! Beware His Mosaics! While they may lend the sweet scent of blueberry and lemon, of spice and of pine, they will only lead to the bitter end He’s always held in store for you. But fear not! For only if you place your trust in His Darkliness, may He lead you to Enlightenment. 7.0% ABV 70 IBU.
According to Gavin his inspiration for this beer came six years ago when he found light in darkness. “At the time, I was a struggling artist in a prosperous city—one of seven kindred spirits sharing a two bedroom apartment and a feeling of unrealized ambition in the Outer Richmond district of San Francisco. We trudged through our days and danced through our nights, only to wake in an unsatisfied fog. One foggy afternoon, inspired by chance, we visited a homebrew shop. It was far and away the best $150 I ever spent. By my current standards, the unorthodox libations that poured from that tiny kitchen in the following months were probably terrible. I remember them as the best fermented beverages ever produced by mortals. We designed labels for every beer and chose our crown colors with great care. We sang with triumph at our every victory and grieved inconsolably over every lost ounce. In that crowded Victorian flat, among my over-educated and under-employed family of friends, in a dark, bubbling carboy of hazy suds, I found light.”
“Shortly thereafter, I quit my job and convinced the love of my life to do the same. We packed a U-Haul and set off for home: the Willamette Valley hop country. I began studying physics, microbiology and organic chemistry. I landed an internship at a local brewery, and later, a job with a mobile beer bottling outfit. I homebrewed religiously and was accepted into the UC Davis Master Brewer’s program. I worked harder than I ever had academically and passed the grueling, nine-hour, Institute of Brewing and Distilling examination by the skin of my teeth. I had dedicated my life to chasing the light I’d found in fermentation, and as luck would have it, Full Sail gave me a shot. I am overwhelmingly grateful to everyone who has made this possible. To my family, to my friends, to my professors, to Full Sail, and most of all, to my fiancé, Giselle, thank you.”
“In Lord of Darkness, I hope you find the smooth self-assertion of the Flaked Oats and the coy confidence of the Midnight Wheat. I hope you find the supple sweetness of the Crystal Malts. I hope you find the cool citrus backbone of the Amarillos and the warm tropical flesh of the Mosaics. Above all, in the Lord of Darkness, I hope you find light,” said Lord.
Full Sail has scheduled two “Meet the Brewer and the Beer” events to showcase this new beer. The first Meet Brewer and the Beer event will be at Full Sail at Riverplace in Portland, Tuesday, December 4th from 5:00 – 6:30PM. The second is at the Full Sail Tasting Room and Pub in Hood River, on Thursday, December 6th from 5:00 to 6:30PM. Join the Full Sail crew to celebrate and toast a pint of the new brew.
With each Brewer’s Share series beer, Full Sail picks a local charity to receive a portion of the proceeds from the sale of the beer. Gavin has chosen to support the Groundwork Portland so every keg of Gavin’s beer benefits this organization. Groundwork Portland is the primary non-profit in the Portland metro area focused on brownfields redevelopment and conversion of such land into greenspace, parks, community gardens, and multi-purpose sites.
The Brewer’s Share series is a line-up of small batch draft beers where each Full Sailor takes a turn hand-crafting their own single batch recipe and a portion of the proceeds benefit a local charity of their choosing. Full Sail’s Brewer’s Share Experimental beers will only be available on tap at Full Sail’s Tasting Room and Pub in Hood River, Oregon, and at Full Sail’s Brewery at Riverplace, in Portland, Oregon. Growlers to go are available. The next Brewer’s Share Experimental will be a collaboration beer brewed by Leo Torres, package technician and Eduardo Bello, maintenance supervisor and is expected in February.

Rogue White Whale Ale, brewed with Moby Dick, just released in bottles:
Press Release:
(Newport, OR) – Call it White Whale Ale.
Powell’s Books and Rogue Ales & Spirits, two unique Oregon businesses, have collaborated to create a beer that’s dedicated to everyone with a thirst for books and artisan craft beer – White Whale Ale.
White Whale Ale is infused with the sea-faring spirit of Moby Dick. Michael and Emily Powell took pages from a copy of the book and, along with Rogue brewmaster, John Maier, placed them into the brew kettle. Moby Dick is especially meaningful to Michael Powell, who was inspired to become a bookseller when he found a first edition of the novel in a box of books he’s purchased.
White Whale Ale was brewed in honor of Powell’s Books 41st Anniversary. Powell’s Books is the one of the world’s great independent and family run bookstores. Its flagship stores in downtown Portland, Oregon, covers an entire city block and contains more than one million new and used books. It also serves customers worldwide through Powells.com.
White Whale Ale is available at Rogue Hall in the heart of the Portland State University campus and the Rogue Distillery & Public House located in Portland’s historic Pearl District, just blocks from Powell’s Books on Burnside. Commemorative bottles may also be purchased online at http://www.rogue.com.
Rogue Ales & Spirits is an artisan varietal brewery and distillery founded in Oregon in 1988, as one of America’s first 50 microbreweries. Rogue is available in 50 states and 32 countries, and has won over 900 awards for taste and quality.

Lagunitas Brewing on pace for 260k barrels this year, could land in top five craft brewers
Lagunitas Brewing on pace for 260k barrels this year, could land in top five craft brewers:
(Petaluma, CA) – Lagunitas Brewing Company founder and owner, Tony Magee, told BeerPulse last week that the brewery is probably going to end the year at 260,000 barrels, up approximately 57% from 2011. This despite a hangup or two with getting the new Rolec brewhouse installed and having to temporarily suspend bottling while installing a brand-new bottling line.
260,000 barrels will likely push Lagunitas ahead of Deschutes Brewery, which currently sits in 5th place in terms of annual production among craft brewers. Lagunitas would then trail only The Boston Beer Company, Sierra Nevada, New Belgium and Spoetzl Brewery (makers of Shiner Beer).
Last year, the company produced just over 165,000 barrels, according to the Brewers Association. In 2009, it produced just over 72,000 barrels and has grown 260% in just three years. An unprecedented steep and rapid ascent for a craft brewery producing that much volume.
Magee said that the company has ramped production up way ahead of the 260k barrel/year mark. The company produced and shipped over 33,000 barrels of beer during the month of October or an annual pace of 420,000 barrels.
Magee, who was on his way to Chicago and then New York City where he’s speaking today, also noted that the Chicago brewery buildout is on track to happen on schedule.

New Belgium Brewing Adds a Sweet Pilot Brewhouse
New Belgium Brewing Adds a Sweet Pilot Brewhouse:
I recently visited New Belgium Brewing in Fort Collins, Colorado, one of the top breweries to tour in the US and most impressive craft brewing operations I have seen. One of the highlights was the recently unveiled 10-hectoliter pilot brewery. Sitting in a hall adjacent to their impressive lineup of foeders and climbing rock wall(!) the new brewery is a shiny nicely tricked out brewery that a successful brewpub would be happy to have. The new system is comprised of a two-vessel brewhouse with one mash/lauter vessel and one brew kettle/whirlpool. Four fermenters and two bright beer tanks for conditioning complete the facility, which will primarily be used for research and new product development.

Deschutes Brewery Adds New Year Beer
Deschutes Brewery Adds New Year Beer:
Deschutes Brewery Adds New Year Beer:Clean and refreshing “Deschutes River Ale” underlines importance of brewery’s namesake waterway
October 22, 2012 – Bend, Oregon – Deschutes Brewery honors its namesake Central Oregon river with a brand-new, year-round beer dubbed Deschutes River Ale. The new brew, which underwent several experimental batches at the brewery’s pubs over the past few months, will hit shelves in the spring of 2013. The beer will be released in six-packs and draft to craft beer fans across the western United States and Canada.
“This is a very approachable beer. We’ve been looking forward to releasing it for a long time,” said Brian Faivre, brewmaster for Deschutes. “With a drinkability that compares to session ales – which continue to grow in popularity – Deschutes River Ale definitely puts our own twist on this style.”
Deschutes Brewery took its company name from the Deschutes River which winds through the brewery’s hometown of Bend, Oregon. The name, “Riviere des Chutes,” originated with French trappers who were early settlers in the region. The brewery has long supported the river with programs such as the newly released Deschutes River Recordings, an indie music project which donates money to a local conservancy organization dedicated to protecting the health of the river.
Deschutes River Ale underlines the importance of the river to the culture and inspiration that has fed Deschutes beers for nearly a quarter century. It is a well-balanced and refreshing ale, full of Cascade and Crystal hop character, malt poise and a large helping of craft passion. (ABV: 3.9%; IBUs: 28)

Dogfish Head, Grateful Dead to collaborate on American Beauty Strong Pale Ale
Dogfish Head, Grateful Dead to collaborate on American Beauty Strong Pale Ale:
Press Release:
(Milton, DE) – Dogfish Head Craft Brewery and Grateful Dead, two pioneers who built their followings by connecting directly with beer lovers and music lovers, are collaborating on the newest beer in Dogfish’s line of off-centered ales.
Working in that happy place between creative ideas and like-minded people, the off-centered brewery and free-spirited band have been trading ideas for a beer they’re calling “American Beauty.” They’ve settled on a strong pale ale with all-American hops and barley, and now they’re asking their loyal fans to suggest a special ingredient – and the Dead-inspired story behind it.
“Grateful Dead Productions is extremely pleased to be partnering with Dogfish Head Craft Brewery on the American Beauty pale ale. We’ve looked for a long while for the perfect brewery to team up with for a Grateful Dead-inspired brew, and feel we’ve finally found the right fit. Aside from Dogfish’s history with music-themed brews, we love their beer, and think it’s the best around. Plus, these are really good people and are the type of folks we want to work with,” says David Lemieux, legacy manager for Grateful Dead.
“The feedback the band got from Dead Heads was always an important factor in their shows,” says Dogfish Founder and President Sam Calagione. “And at Dogfish, we’ve always thought of our pub regulars and brewery tour guests as an informal focus group, so we’re sending a shout out to all those Dead Heads and Dogfish Heads by making them a driving force behind this beer.”
Did you trade a bushel of fresh clementines for tickets to a two-night-stand at Long Beach Arena? Or maybe your dad first laid eyes on your mom sipping a cup of green tea in the parking lot of the legendary Cornell ‘77 show? Jog your memory, tell the story, and suggest the ingredient at the heart of that story. You could help bring this counterculture collaboration to life.
Suggestions for American Beauty’s final ingredient will be taken online in December. A panel from the Dogfish Head and Grateful Dead teams will pick the ingredient they feel works best in the context of a strong pale ale recipe. The brewery and band hope to invite the fan who suggested the ingredient to Dogfish’s coastal Delaware brewpub in the spring of 2013 to help brew a test batch.
“My wife, Mariah, and I went to our first Dead show together in the summer of ‘91,” says Calagione, “and I’ve been listening to Workingman’s Dead and Shakedown Street, two of the earliest albums I ever owned, on my morning kayak trips. It’s amazing how timeless those albums are.”
American Beauty is expected to hit taps and shelves throughout Dogfish’s 27-state distribution network in October 2013. Stay tuned to www.dogfish.com for details on how to be a part of this grassroots brew.

Full Sail LTD No. 6 Lager, Session Fest Lager, Wreck the Halls, Wassail highlight Q4 beers
Full Sail LTD No. 6 Lager, Session Fest Lager, Wreck the Halls, Wassail highlight Q4 beers:
Press Release:
(Hood River, OR) – In Hood River, every year a few undeniable signs signal when winter is at the doorstep. The cool east winds begin to blow, Mt. Hood and Mt. Adams get a white blanket of fresh powder, and the snow report for the backcountry regains its trance-like hold. But most of all, we know its winter because Full Sail Brewing Co. holiday beers start flowing once again.
“It all began back in 1988 when we began our tradition of holiday brewing with Wassail. Traditionally, these beers were a bit more of everything – malt, hops and alcohol – to emphasize a brewery’s appreciation for its customers and to reflect the richness of the holiday season. So it is with Wassail and all our holiday offerings. Choosing our ingredients for Wassail is like taking time to choose the perfect gift. Each year we carefully select the best hops and malts to brew this special beer. This year’s Wassail is brewed with a range of caramel malts and dark chocolate malts giving it a deep mahogany color and a full malty body, perfect for the holidays. We used a blend of European noble hops and Pacific Northwest aroma hops for a pleasantly hoppy finish creating a deliciously balanced beer that appeals to both hop and malt lovers alike. It’s like our own little Christmas miracle,” said Jamie Emmerson, Full Sail’s Executive Brewmaster. Wassail will be available in 6 packs and on draft from October through December. ABV 7% IBU 56
Over time, Full Sail has continued to add to their holiday presents. Wreck the Halls, in their Brewer’s Share series, is a sublime hybrid of an American style IPA and a “Winter Warmer” style strong ale. The result is a bold beer that celebrates the holidays with an intriguing blend of Centennial hops that provide elegant citrus notes balanced by a backdrop of a rich caramel malt body. Wreck the Halls is dry hopped further, thereby amplifying the aroma and flavor. A perfect way to celebrate the season, Wreck the Halls will be available on draft and in 22oz bottles in early November through December. ABV 6.5%, IBU 68.
Session Fest is Full Sail’s Session holiday beer that comes in a stubby little bottle, makes a great stocking stuffer, and is the perfect beer to leave by the fireplace for Santa or Santa’s little helpers. According to Full Sail Executive Brewmaster, Jamie Emmerson, “Session Fest is a Czech-style strong lager (gotta love the Czechs!) called polotmavé or literally “light dark or semi-dark.” Brewed with 2 Row Pale malt, Munich malt, Caramel malt and Wheat malt, and hopped with a blend of Glaciers and Cascades, Session Fest has a medium-to-full body balancing candy caramel and full malt flavors that are underscored by a spicy hoppiness that provides a nice perfume with citrus and pine overtones and a long clean finish. Session Fest will be available in 12 packs from October through December. 6.2% ABV 26 IBU.
And this year, Full Sail introduces their new holiday beer for their Limited Edition Lager series – LTD 06. LTD means limited edition, but according to Full Sail’s Founder and CEO, Irene Firmat, at Full Sail it means something even more: Live the Dream. “We’ve been living out our dream: brewing beer, our own way, in one of the most beautiful places on earth. We dedicate our LTD Series to everyone who’s living the dream, whatever that dream might be. Our passion for brewing beer was born from our experiences travelling throughout Europe and enjoying the richness of the brewing heritage of great lager beer styles. So with each LTD beer, we create our own individual passport back to these wonderful beer experiences showcasing an original lager recipe available only for a limited time.” LTD 06, a black bock, is lush and full bodied with hints of roast, coffee, and chocolate in the aroma followed by flavors of caramel and figs with a long creamy smooth finish. LTD 06 is brewed as a Czech style Cerné Speciálnà with 2 row Pale, Munich, Caramel, and Chocolate Malts and hopped with Santiam and Perle hops. LTD 06 will be available in 6 packs and on draft from October through December. ABV 7.0% IBU 34.
“We have crafted all our beers to be great guests at your holiday celebrations and they are a wonderful addition to every holiday meal. All Full Sail beers share balance and nuance and help to inspire the camaraderie of the holidays. So come celebrate the holidays with us. Cheers from the Full Sail Crew!” added Firmat.

Bridgeport Brewing's "Enchanted" New Beer
Bridgeport Brewing's "Enchanted" New Beer:
CLICK HERE to read the rest of this post!
For fans of barrel-aged and/or fruit beers, Bridgeport's newest may be worth seeking out. Enchanted is a new, very limited barrel-aged version of Stumptown Tart from 2010. Aged for 2 years in oak barrels, Bridgeport calls it a Framboise. I wouldn't go that far, as the base beer is no Lambic, but I can see 2 years on wood treating this beer well.
Note the new packaging design for Enchanted, reminiscent of the screen printed designs on the new Hopworks Abbey line of bottles for its stylistic but sparse imagery. I wonder if this will be the first of a new reserve series from Bridgeport? Bottles will be available only in Oregon.
“This is a special one for our team,” commented Brewmaster Jeff Edgerton. “The 2010 Stumptown Tart was a favorite not only amongst our loyal BridgePort fans – but also amongst our brewers. The only way to up the ante on that beer was to let it age in oak barrels for two years. The result is something surprising and pretty unforgettable.”

At most gas stations, you fuel up, grab a soda or perhaps a six-pack of your favorite beer. Now a Bend station is taking that to the next level. The Stop & Go Shell station on Highway 20 and 27th Street has something no other gas station in the Northwest. Henry Weinhard’s brand goes national
Henry Weinhard’s brand goes national:
Update: The New School reports that MillerCoors won’t renew its production contract with Full Sail Brewing next spring
Press Release:
(Chicago, IL) – Henry Weinhard spent considerable time and effort exploring the Pacific Northwest and searching for the perfect location for his brewery. More than 150 years later, beer drinkers across the country have the chance to explore the taste of the Pacific Northwest. This month, Henry Weinhard’s is launching three beers nationally: Private Reserve, Redwood Flats Amber Ale and Woodland Pass IPA.
The affordable, uncomplicated craft beers pair well with easy-going foods, such as nachos, burgers and steak.
There’s never been a guy who cared more about making good beer easy to enjoy than Henry Weinhard. He left Germany in 1856 with nothing but a recipe, a copper kettle and a thirst to share his beers with the people of America. He was a savvy businessman, a straight shooter and generous to a fault. Legend has it, he even offered to pump free beer through a public fountain so people could enjoy it at will.
The three Henry Weinhard’s beers are now available in bottles, priced around $6.49 per six-pack. Woodland Pass IPA and Redwood Flats Amber are also available on draft.
About Henry Weinhard’s
In the spring of 1856, a young brew master from Germany traveled months aboard a cargo ship to America and arrived in Oregon Territory. Young Henry established his brewery outside of Ft. Vancouver and had a steady stream of thirsty trappers, soldiers and loggers to enjoy his high quality brews. Demand quickly increased for Henry’s fine brews and he continued to share them with the people by purchasing saloons, delivering beer to neighboring cities via horse-drawn carriages and even shipping beer aboard barges to San Francisco. By the end of the century, Henry became a leading citizen of Portland and was revered for his craft of brewing. He passed away in 1904 and left behind a wealth of friends and a tradition of high quality, authentic beers, brewed with ingredients from the Pacific Northwest, including Woodland Pass India Pale Ale, Redwood Flats Amber Ale, Private Reserve, Blue Boar, Northwest Wheat and Blonde Lager.

- Woodland Pass India Pale Ale: Originally developed for British sailors stationed in India, IPAs were aggressively hopped to help prevent spoilage on long ocean voyages. Henry’s has eased up on the hoppiness just a bit to let the caramel malts shine through and let beer drinkers appreciate the hops in all their glory.
- Redwood Flats Amber Ale: With its beautiful copper color and subtle hop aroma, Redwood Flats Amber is our traditional take on a modern American classic. Featuring a unique blend of American hops and malts, this beer is bold and assertive, with a smooth, hoppy flavor that’s easy to drink.
- Private Reserve: A crisp, clean, American Pale Lager, Henry Weinhard’s Private Reserve blends Henry’s German heritage with the natural ingredients of the Pacific Northwest. It’s brewed with 100 percent Cascade hops from Oregon.
