Alaskan Raspberry Wheat returns to Pilot Series on May 31st
Alaskan Raspberry Wheat returns to Pilot Series on May 31st:
Press Release:
(Juneau, AK) – Summer seems finally to have arrived in Southeast Alaska and Alaskan Brewing Co. has responded by announcing the return of the eagerly anticipated Alaskan Raspberry Wheat Ale, scheduled for release May 31. Raspberry Wheat was first unveiled in 2010 as the inaugural brew in Alaskan’s Pilot Series. It proved to be very popular, particularly in its home town of Juneau, and the brewery has released it in early summer every year since.
Raspberries and other berries are a summer treat in Alaska, and like much in the brief Alaskan summers, their ephemeral availability drives substantial demand in the 49th state. “There are almost fifty types of wild berries in the state,” said Alaskan Brewer Jessie Perry, “so they’ve long been a staple in the diet of both Alaskans and the many bears that live here. Brewing a beer that features some of our favorite berries is a natural fit.”
Alaskan Raspberry Wheat is an American-style wheat ale highlighting the bright flavors and inviting aroma of more than 3,000 pounds of real raspberries added during fermentation. The tart flavor of raspberries balances the full-bodied wheat profile and malt sweetness of this enticingly red-hued brew. Bigger than most traditional fruit beers, Alaskan Raspberry Wheat has a little extra kick to its dry and effervescent finish.
The 2012 release of the beer saw a record turn-out of fans, and the Brewery’s Gift Shop sold out of the entire initial bottling in under an hour. This year, Alaskan has increased the inventory and the release of the Raspberry Wheat will be celebrated with a pancake feed featuring raspberry syrup and special flapjacks prepared by the Brew Crew to serve to the expectant crowds—some of whom have already promised to camp out to reserve their places in line.
Alaskan Raspberry Wheat was awarded the 2012 Northwest Brewing News Readers’ Choice Award for best fruit beer, and is a member of Alaskan’s growing list of rotating specialty recipes released in the brewery’s limited-edition Pilot Series. Pilot Series beers represent the creativity of the Alaskan Brew Crew.
“Each new recipe is first created on our one-barrel experimental brew system, perfected in our ten-barrel pilot brewhouse, then put to the test through our Rough Draft series of draft-only beers distributed in Alaska,” explains Alaskan Production Manager Dave Wilson. Those special brews that stand out to the Brew Crew and their fans in Alaska graduate to a limited release in the Alaskan Pilot Series. “Alaskan Raspberry Wheat has been one of our favorite Pilot Series brews.”

Craft Beer: A Hopumentary (video)
Craft Beer: A Hopumentary (video):
Per the YouTube page…
For most of the 20th century, beer was dominated by large-scale breweries like Anheuser-Busch, Miller and Coors. By the early 80′s, through industry consolidation there were little more than 100 breweries left in the US. The result was an entirely American style of beer, one that had been diluted, homogenized and mass produced. In this environment, American beer lovers seeking quality and variety began brewing their own with a few intrepid pioneers eventually going commercial. With this, a new movement in American brewing began, one of smaller producers focusing on quality over quantity. This is a story of Craft Beer.

Much like "Craft Beer" or "Microbrew" or whatever you want to call it began it's comeback 20 or so years ago so now is craft hard cider.

About ALS
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, Lou Gehrig ‘s disease) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that leads to paralysis, due to the death of motor neurons in the spinal cord and brain. There is no known cure for the disease. About 5,000 people in the US are diagnosed with ALS each year; the incidence is similar to multiple sclerosis. However, with no effective treatment, the average patient survives only two to five years following diagnosis. There are about 30,000 people in the US diagnosed with ALS today. The worldwide population of ALS patients is estimated at 450,000.
About ALS Therapy Development Institute (ALS TDI)
The mission of the ALS Therapy Development Institute (ALS TDI) is to develop effective therapeutics that slow or stop amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, Lou Gehrig ‘s disease) as soon as possible for patients today. Focused on meeting this urgent unmet medical need, ALS TDI executes a robust target discovery program, while simultaneously operating the world’s largest efforts to preclinically validate potential therapeutics; including a pipeline of dozens of small molecules, protein biologics, gene therapies and cell-based constructs. The world’s first nonprofit biotech institute, ALS TDI has developed an industrial-scale platform, employs 30 professional scientists and evaluates dozens of potential therapeutics each year. 2013 International Brewing Awards
2013 International Brewing Awards:
Nine beers and one cider were today named as overall Champions of The International Brewing Awards 2013, at a presentation in London’s Guildhall that marked the end of this year’s competition.
More than 400 people attended today’s celebration, among them many of the brewers and cider makers from all over the world who had entered the bi-annual competition. Chair of judges Bill Taylor presented not only the trophies to the Championship winners, but also Bronze, Silver and Gold medals to 96 winners across the 10 beer and cider categories.
Taylor said, “The International Brewing Awards are about recognising excellence in brewing and cider making and it gives us great pleasure to present this year’s Champions with their trophy.
“Close to 1,000 beers and ciders were sent into the competition in Burton-upon-Trent earlier this year, so to be selected as one of just 10 Champions is a great accolade and one that today’s winners will surely be able to use to advantage in raising the profile of their beers and ciders.”
The list of medal winners reflected the international reach of the competition, with recognition for brewers and cider makers from 25 countries, including South Korea, Greece, Cambodia and Lithuania alongside more established brewing nations such as the USA, UK and Belgium.
Equally diverse was the range of styles present in the beers taking honours today, thanks to the broad structure of the competition, which encourages brewers to innovate and interpret styles in their own way.
Ruth Evans, director of competition organisers Brewing Technology Services, said, “We are delighted with the response to The International Brewing Awards 2013. The competition attracted more entries than in 2011, from 50 countries and from a broad spectrum of producers from regional micro-brewers to multi-national companies. This diversity is important to our Awards and is key to their appeal to the international brewing community.
She added, “We evolved the Awards this year, by reintroducing a cider category.. We will be building on this, as well as reviewing our existing beer categories, for the 2015 Awards.”
The International Brewing Awards 2015 will be held in Burton-upon-Trent in February 2015. Entries will open on 1st August 2014.

Pucker-Up: Hopworks Resuscitating Sour Barrel Program:
And that's not all. Taking a moment away from a demanding production schedule and steady growth, the brewers at Hopworks Urban Brewery have recently begun experimenting with everything from wild yeasts and fruits to granola beer, and expanding the brewery's barrel collection in the process. If you're one of those who delighted in Hopworks' 2010 creation--Piledriver, a melange of barrel-aged beers, wild yeasts and cherries that was a startlingly delicious first attempt at a sour beer--then you will be very pleased.

BridgePort Stumptown Tart returns with new look, blueberries
BridgePort Stumptown Tart returns with new look, blueberries:
Press Release:
(Portland, OR) – Each year, BridgePort Brewing Company chooses a different fruit to include in its limited edition beer, Stumptown Tart. With Oregon’s variety of incredible produce it can be a difficult decision. This year, the brewery turned to an Oregon favorite – blueberries. These indigo berries were blended with Oregon grown raspberries and blackberries, creating a brew that is rich in color and in taste.
The addition of blueberries gives off a remarkable amount of flavor. That flavor, when blended with an increase in Belgian yeast, yields a nice balance of fruit and noticeable Belgian characteristics.
“The same climate that helps us grow the world’s best aroma hops also helps to grow over 75 million pounds of Oregon blueberries each year,” comments Brewmaster, Jeff Edgerton. “For many people, the release of Stumptown Tart signals summer and we’re all looking forward to opening up the patio at the brewpub to enjoy a Tart in the Portland sunshine.”
BridgePort will host a Stumptown Tart release party Thursday, April 18 from 5:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at the BridgePort Brewpub in Portland. Be among the first to sample the new beer while supplies last. As guests are enjoying their first taste, bottle model Bernie Dexter will be puckering up at the Stumptown Tart kissing booth. For $1, guests can snag a smooch from the Stumptown Tart herself and have their bottle signed by the well-known pin-up model. All Donations will go to The American Cancer Society.
BridgePort’s Stumptown Tart Stats:
IBUs: 21 ABV: 7.8% Color: Hazy Purple/Pink OG: 17.0
Ingredients: Pilsner malt, wheat malt, Belgian yeast, ale yeast, lager yeast and 5 pounds per barrel each of raspberries, blackberries, and blueberries.
Description: A mixed berry Belgian style ale infused with Oregon raspberries, blackberries, and blueberries.

Deschutes Brewery update: 15% growth, new tanks, Fresh Squeezed IPA, Class of ’88
Deschutes Brewery update: 15% growth, new tanks, Fresh Squeezed IPA, Class of ’88:
(Bend, OR) – BeerPulse caught up with Deschutes Brewery Digital Marketing Manager, Jason Randles, on Friday to chat about the brewery’s foray into cans. You can get all the info you need on Mirror Pond Pale Ale cans there. We also asked Randles about production, capacity and new beers.
CAPACITY
Deschutes produced just over 252,000 barrels in 2012, up ~15% from 2011, and is at capacity, says Randles. The addition of five 1,300-barrel tanks at the end of April will fix that, taking the brewery up to 430,000 barrels of annual capacity. This is the second set of tanks that will fit into a ten-tank cradle with the other five having gone into operation last year.
Deschutes can increase output beyond 430k/year “with a lot of work” but the new tanks provide some cushion for a few years. Packaging will eventually transition over to a warehouse at the Bend facility, opening up opportunities to grow capacity again.
With the capacity boost, Deschutes will add “at least one state” in the back half of the year. The team was very pleased with the Illinois launch with Wirtz in January. Inversion IPA should be making its way to that market now.
While fashionable over the last year, Randles notes that Deschutes is not looking to open a second brewery.
CONTRACTING
Deschutes considers contracting as a logical next step to eventually getting its beers out to the East Coast and the canning partnership with Cold Spring is the first move. Illinois was the first state the brewery entered East of the Mississippi and it has ambitions to go further.
“Shipping beer from Bend to the East Coast and Midwest- like other breweries, we are looking at other ways to deliver fresh beer to those fans. Part of it is looking for that contract brewer out there. We’ve been looking for years but haven’t got there yet.”
DESCHUTES RIVER ALE
Building on the successful 2012 launch of Deschutes Chainbreaker White IPA (#1 new craft beer in supermarkets), Deschutes introduced River Ale this month. A new year-round beer, River Ale hit the market on March 4th, primarily in independent shops and small chains. It is still very early though Randles says, “reception has been good.” There are a few markets where it may not appear until May like Missouri and Minnesota. It had yet to make it to Kansas as of late last week.
DESCHUTES CLASS OF ’88 BARLEYWINE
Here is a quick primer for the uninformed on this 25th anniversary project. Deschutes is looking at the week of April 8th for the first release. The company is coordinating with collaboration partners, Rogue Ales and North Coast, on timing for the respective versions.
DESCHUTES FRESH SQUEEZED IPA
Deschutes will replace its spring offering in the high-end 22 oz. Bond Street Series, Hop in the Dark, with Fresh-Squeezed IPA. Like so many popular IPAs in the modern era, this one focuses on Citra hops. The beer description reads, “Three types of malt, one type of bittering hop and a whole lot of Citra hops.” The label artwork has been submitted to the TTB so we will see it soon though Randles notes there is a subsequent label still to come that will be the final version.
DESCHUTES ARMORY XPA
Armory XPA launched across Deschutes’ footprint earlier this year, only on draft. “It is another one of those beers that was developed out of the Portland Pub and kind of became the signature beer there.”

Rogue Farms Honey Kölsch added as newest addition to Rogue Ales’ lineup
Rogue Farms Honey Kölsch added as newest addition to Rogue Ales’ lineup:
(Newport, OR) – Rogue Ales recently released its 2013 schedule.
We are already a couple months in and Rogue released five rotational beers this winter.
Up next are XS 2IPA and MoM’s Hefeweizen in April followed by American Amber Ale and Dad’s Little Helper Black IPA in May.
The only new introduction listed on the schedule is “Rogue Farms Honey Kölsch,” presumably part of the “Chatoe Rogue” series. That beer will debut in July.
That said, Rogue is part of a collaboration with Deschutes and North Coast that will yield three different bottled barleywines. One of those will be brewed out of Rogue’s facility.
And who knows, maybe we will finally see Beard Beer.

U.S. craft brewers sell $10.2 billion in beer in 2012, dollar market share hits 10%
U.S. craft brewers sell $10.2 billion in beer in 2012, dollar market share hits 10%:
Press Release:
(Boulder, CO) – The Brewers Association (BA), the trade association representing small and independent American brewers, today released 2012 data on U.S. craft brewing¹ growth. In a year when the total U.S. beer market grew by one percent, craft brewers saw a 15 percent rise in volume² and a 17 percent increase in dollar growth, representing a total barrel increase of almost 1.8 million.
With production at 13,235,917 barrels in 2012, craft brewers reached 6.5 percent volume of the total U.S. beer market, up from 5.7 percent the previous year. Additionally, craft dollar share of the total U.S. beer market reached 10.2 percent in 2012, as retail dollar value from craft brewers was estimated at $10.2 billion, up from $8.7 billion in 2011.
“Beer is a $99 billion industry to which craft brewers are making a significant contribution, with retail sales share hitting double digits for the first time in 2012,” said Paul Gatza, director, Brewers Association. “Small and independent brewers are consistently innovating and producing high quality, flavor-forward craft brewed beer. Americans are not only responding to greater access to these products, but also to the stories and people behind them.”
In 2012, there was an 18 percent increase in the number of U.S. operating breweries, with the total count reaching 2,403. The count includes 409 new brewery openings and only 43 closings. Small breweries created an estimated 4,857 more jobs during the year, employing 108,440 workers, compared to 103,583 the year prior.
“On average, we are seeing slightly more than one craft brewery per day opening somewhere in the U.S., and we anticipate even more in the coming year. There is clearly a thirst in the marketplace for craft brewed beer, as indicated by the continued growth year after year,” added Gatza. “These small breweries are doing great things for their local communities, the greater community of craft brewers, our food arts culture and the overall economy.”
Note: Numbers are preliminary. A more extensive analysis will be released during the Craft Brewers Conference in Washington, D.C. from March 26-29. The full 2012 industry analysis will be published in the May/June 2013 issue of The New Brewer, highlighting regional trends and sales by individual breweries.
¹The definition of a craft brewer as stated by the Brewers Association: An American craft brewer is small, independent, and traditional. Small: Annual production of beer less than 6 million barrels. Beer production is attributed to a brewer according to the rules of alternating proprietorships. Flavored malt beverages are not considered beer for purposes of this definition. Independent: Less than 25 percent of the craft brewery is owned or controlled (or equivalent economic interest) by an alcoholic beverage industry member who is not themselves a craft brewer.
Traditional: A brewer who has either an all malt flagship (the beer which represents the greatest volume among that brewers brands) or has at least 50 percent of its volume in either all malt beers or in beers which use adjuncts to enhance rather than lighten flavor.
² Volume by craft brewers represent total taxable production.

Oregon breweries approach 2013 milestones
Oregon breweries approach 2013 milestones, 10 Barrel and Boneyard post big 2012:
Last week, The Oregon Liquor Control Commission released final 2012 numbers ranking breweries by taxable barrels, the amount of beer produced and sold in-state.
Note: It should, therefore, go without saying that this breakdown doesn’t consider sales from out-of-state breweries, which account for 84% of Oregon sales.
Without further ado…
TOTAL BREWERIES:
In 2012, the total number of taxable Oregon breweries rose from 110 to 134, an increase of 22%. Compare to 2011 when taxable breweries went from 94 to 110, a 17% increase, and 2010 when taxable breweries went from 78 to 94, a 20.5% increase. At this rate, the number of breweries in Oregon could pass 150 by the end of 2013, effectively doubling the state’s breweries in just three years.
Half of the state’s breweries operate in the Portland metro, according to the Oregon Brewers’ Guild fact sheet.
TOTAL BARRELS:
According to that same fact sheet in 2008, Oregon breweries’ market share of total sales in barrels (bbls) was 11.4% in the year 2007. According to the latest OLCC numbers, that number rose to 16.5% in 2012, a full 5% gain in market share over a span of five years. Total taxable sales in Oregon reached nearly 2.8 million bbls.
On the downside, taxable bbls from Oregon breweries increased just 6% to ~462,000 bbls after consecutive years of double-digit growth. Taxable bbls had previously increased 10% in 2011 and 15% in 2010.
Oregon is one of the nation’s most mature craft beer markets, if not the top market. To illustrate using the extreme case of Alabama, taxable bbls from in-state small brewers came just shy of 20,000 bbls last year. One thing to consider going forward with a market this mature is how much upside there is for brewers going after volume. Artisanal-centric breweries doing barrel-aged beers and the like? No problem if they can make the economics work. Volume appears to be a bigger challenge.
So who grabbed the ~26,000 incremental bbls of growth last year?
TOP THREE BREWERIES:
Deschutes Brewery is back in the #1 spot with nearly 89,000 bbls sold or about one-third of the brewery’s total sales in 2012. At 8.5% growth (7,000 bbls), that is slightly behind the company’s national average. Not bad at all for a 25 year-old company in its home base.
Craft Brew Alliance saw nearly 4% growth (3,000 bbls) but fell to #2 with just over 88,000 bbls in Oregon. With CBA facilities in Portland, Washington, New Hampshire and Hawaii producing more than 600,000 bbls annually collectively, it is hard to glean much from just the top line Oregon number. Because the company is publicly traded, we can get a better view when it reports fourth quarter and full-year earnings in March.
Ninkasi Brewing sales rose 13% (5,300 bbls) to 41,841 bbls in Oregon with total sales amounting to 68,000 bbls across its Northwest distribution area, according to Co-Founder, Nikos Ridge. Ninkasi sales grew 75% in 2011 in Oregon so this comes as a bit of a surprise though Ridge tells BeerPulse that the slow down was by design due to coming capacity constraints. Ninkasi upped its annual working capacity to 95,000 bbls which it projects to be up against throughout 2013.
THE REST OF THE TOP DOZEN:
After the top three, sales stayed flat or even declined for a number tenured Oregon breweries: (4) Portland/MacTarnahan’s, (5) BridgePort, (6) Full Sail, (7) Henry Weinhard’s/MillerCoors and (8) Rogue Ales. BridgePort sales actually declined by 3,000 bbls, over 10%.
That brings us to (9) where we find the big winner of the year: 10 Barrel Brewing Company. 10 Barrel’s sales shot up from 2,634 bbls to 8,648 bbls. 6,000 barrels. 225% growth. The company opened up a new 50-barrel brewhouse in Bend at the beginning of 2012 and plans to open a brewpub in Idaho this spring.
10 Barrel even managed to leapfrog Hopworks Urban Brewery which fell to 10th place. Hopworks still grew sales by 1,000 bbls (or 15%) to 7,600. That number is likely to rise by double-digits again in 2013 with the addition of a new canning line this past year.
Behind Hopworks in 11th place is Boneyard Beer Company, which, like 10 Barrel, had a huge year increasing sales by 175% to 7,500 bbls. Boneyard aims to open a new facility with a canning line this spring.
What is apparent is that this new crop of to-be ‘regional’ breweries like 10 Barrel and Boneyard are taking share at the expense of a group of tenured breweries, ones that will likely have to look elsewhere for growth. Rogue is already national. Henry Weinhard’s is wisely going national. MacTarnahan’s went the opposite direction and just re-branded as Portland Brewing Company. What will Gambrinus (parent company) do with BridgePort? Will employee-owned Full Sail look to expand its distribution further?
Boneyard and 10 Barrel actually sold more bbls to Oregon beer drinkers than Rogue for the combined months of November and December. At its current rate, 10 Barrel may actually hit 15k bbls in 2013 and pass Rogue for the year.
What to watch in 2013: will Oregon reach 150 breweries and will those breweries pass 500k in-state barrels in 2013?
Last week, The Oregon Liquor Control Commission released final 2012 numbers ranking breweries by taxable barrels, the amount of beer produced and sold in-state.

A River Runs Through It
A River Runs Through It:
Last Friday I received two packages to greet the oncoming weekend, one from Deschutes Brewery contained 3 bottles of their brand new spring seasonal "River Ale" the other a small envelope contained the Hermetus bottle opener and resealer from Kaufman Mercantile. The opportunity presented itself to try out both said items with each other on a surprisingly clear skied day on my back porch.

Samuel Adams IPA Hopology variety pack released earlier this month
Samuel Adams IPA Hopology variety pack released earlier this month:
(Boston, MA) – The Boston Beer Company sent out its monthly newsletter on Friday and made note of a returning Samuel Adams pack. More below…
—
Last year we brewed the limited-edition IPA Hopology variety pack for the hop lovers. Each IPA takes on a different hop character and builds upon it with layers of complex flavors inspired by unique combinations of ingredients and/or fusion with other beer styles. The outcry from Sam fans was so overwhelming that we had to bring it back for 2013.
Hopology is perfect for getting together with fellow hop heads and sampling the spectrum of flavors available in IPAs today. Styles included in the 2013 IPA Hopology variety pack, in the order we recommend sampling, are: Whitewater IPA, Grumpy Monk, Latitude 48 (new release for 2013 featuring Mosaic™ hops), Tasman Red, Dark Depths, and Third Voyage.
This variety pack will be a limited release again, so be sure to track one down in your area.

Bridgeport's Bear Hug Cherry Chocolate Stout
Bridgeport's Bear Hug Cherry Chocolate Stout:
Dark beers are all the rage in February, I like seeing Stouts and similar styles get their due. Bridgeport Brewing is releasing one of their stranger branding beers "Bear Hug Cherry Chocolate Stout", regardless of the name and odd label it seems like it will be a crowd pleaser.

Stone Oak-Smoked Barleywine
Stone Oak-Smoked Barleywine:
Every odd year Stone Brewing Co. is releasing an "odd" version of its classic Old Guardian Barleywine. You may remember the Belgo version in 2011 (let's try to forget about the Anise version of Russian Imperial Stout). This year's release is hitting shelves on February 25th in Oregon and looks like a very promising twist--an oak-smoked version of the barleywine.
