New Belgium Brewing Adds a Sweet Pilot Brewhouse

New Belgium Brewing Adds a Sweet Pilot Brewhouse:
New Belgium's new pilot brewhouse

I recently visited New Belgium Brewing in Fort Collins, Colorado, one of the top breweries to tour in the US and most impressive craft brewing operations I have seen. One of the highlights was the recently unveiled 10-hectoliter pilot brewery. Sitting in a hall adjacent to their impressive lineup of foeders and climbing rock wall(!) the new brewery is a shiny nicely tricked out brewery that a successful brewpub would be happy to have. The new system is comprised of a two-vessel brewhouse with one mash/lauter vessel and one brew kettle/whirlpool. Four fermenters and two bright beer tanks for conditioning complete the facility, which will primarily be used for research and new product development.

Deschutes Brewery Adds New Year Beer

Deschutes Brewery Adds New Year Beer:
Deschutes Brewery Adds New Year Beer:Clean and refreshing “Deschutes River Ale” underlines importance of brewery’s namesake waterway
October 22, 2012 – Bend, Oregon – Deschutes Brewery honors its namesake Central Oregon river with a brand-new, year-round beer dubbed Deschutes River Ale. The new brew, which underwent several experimental batches at the brewery’s pubs over the past few months, will hit shelves in the spring of 2013. The beer will be released in six-packs and draft to craft beer fans across the western United States and Canada.
“This is a very approachable beer. We’ve been looking forward to releasing it for a long time,” said Brian Faivre, brewmaster for Deschutes. “With a drinkability that compares to session ales – which continue to grow in popularity – Deschutes River Ale definitely puts our own twist on this style.”
Deschutes Brewery took its company name from the Deschutes River which winds through the brewery’s hometown of Bend, Oregon. The name, “Riviere des Chutes,” originated with French trappers who were early settlers in the region. The brewery has long supported the river with programs such as the newly released Deschutes River Recordings, an indie music project which donates money to a local conservancy organization dedicated to protecting the health of the river.
Deschutes River Ale underlines the importance of the river to the culture and inspiration that has fed Deschutes beers for nearly a quarter century. It is a well-balanced and refreshing ale, full of Cascade and Crystal hop character, malt poise and a large helping of craft passion. (ABV: 3.9%; IBUs: 28)

Dogfish Head, Grateful Dead to collaborate on American Beauty Strong Pale Ale

Dogfish Head, Grateful Dead to collaborate on American Beauty Strong Pale Ale:
Dogfish Head American Beauty Strong Pale Ale
Press Release:
(Milton, DE) – Dogfish Head Craft Brewery and Grateful Dead, two pioneers who built their followings by connecting directly with beer lovers and music lovers, are collaborating on the newest beer in Dogfish’s line of off-centered ales.
Working in that happy place between creative ideas and like-minded people, the off-centered brewery and free-spirited band have been trading ideas for a beer they’re calling “American Beauty.” They’ve settled on a strong pale ale with all-American hops and barley, and now they’re asking their loyal fans to suggest a special ingredient – and the Dead-inspired story behind it.
“Grateful Dead Productions is extremely pleased to be partnering with Dogfish Head Craft Brewery on the American Beauty pale ale. We’ve looked for a long while for the perfect brewery to team up with for a Grateful Dead-inspired brew, and feel we’ve finally found the right fit. Aside from Dogfish’s history with music-themed brews, we love their beer, and think it’s the best around. Plus, these are really good people and are the type of folks we want to work with,” says David Lemieux, legacy manager for Grateful Dead.
“The feedback the band got from Dead Heads was always an important factor in their shows,” says Dogfish Founder and President Sam Calagione. “And at Dogfish, we’ve always thought of our pub regulars and brewery tour guests as an informal focus group, so we’re sending a shout out to all those Dead Heads and Dogfish Heads by making them a driving force behind this beer.”
Did you trade a bushel of fresh clementines for tickets to a two-night-stand at Long Beach Arena? Or maybe your dad first laid eyes on your mom sipping a cup of green tea in the parking lot of the legendary Cornell ‘77 show? Jog your memory, tell the story, and suggest the ingredient at the heart of that story. You could help bring this counterculture collaboration to life.
Dogfish Head American Beauty Strong Pale AleSuggestions for American Beauty’s final ingredient will be taken online in December. A panel from the Dogfish Head and Grateful Dead teams will pick the ingredient they feel works best in the context of a strong pale ale recipe. The brewery and band hope to invite the fan who suggested the ingredient to Dogfish’s coastal Delaware brewpub in the spring of 2013 to help brew a test batch.
“My wife, Mariah, and I went to our first Dead show together in the summer of ‘91,” says Calagione, “and I’ve been listening to Workingman’s Dead and Shakedown Street, two of the earliest albums I ever owned, on my morning kayak trips. It’s amazing how timeless those albums are.”
American Beauty is expected to hit taps and shelves throughout Dogfish’s 27-state distribution network in October 2013. Stay tuned to www.dogfish.com for details on how to be a part of this grassroots brew.

Full Sail LTD No. 6 Lager, Session Fest Lager, Wreck the Halls, Wassail highlight Q4 beers

Full Sail LTD No. 6 Lager, Session Fest Lager, Wreck the Halls, Wassail highlight Q4 beers:
Full Sail LTD Lager 06
Press Release:
(Hood River, OR) – In Hood River, every year a few undeniable signs signal when winter is at the doorstep. The cool east winds begin to blow, Mt. Hood and Mt. Adams get a white blanket of fresh powder, and the snow report for the backcountry regains its trance-like hold. But most of all, we know its winter because Full Sail Brewing Co. holiday beers start flowing once again.
“It all began back in 1988 when we began our tradition of holiday brewing with Wassail. Traditionally, these beers were a bit more of everything – malt, hops and alcohol – to emphasize a brewery’s appreciation for its customers and to reflect the richness of the holiday season. So it is with Wassail and all our holiday offerings. Choosing our ingredients for Wassail is like taking time to choose the perfect gift. Each year we carefully select the best hops and malts to brew this special beer. This year’s Wassail is brewed with a range of caramel malts and dark chocolate malts giving it a deep mahogany color and a full malty body, perfect for the holidays. We used a blend of European noble hops and Pacific Northwest aroma hops for a pleasantly hoppy finish creating a deliciously balanced beer that appeals to both hop and malt lovers alike. It’s like our own little Christmas miracle,” said Jamie Emmerson, Full Sail’s Executive Brewmaster. Wassail will be available in 6 packs and on draft from October through December. ABV 7% IBU 56
Over time, Full Sail has continued to add to their holiday presents. Wreck the Halls, in their Brewer’s Share series, is a sublime hybrid of an American style IPA and a “Winter Warmer” style strong ale. The result is a bold beer that celebrates the holidays with an intriguing blend of Centennial hops that provide elegant citrus notes balanced by a backdrop of a rich caramel malt body. Wreck the Halls is dry hopped further, thereby amplifying the aroma and flavor. A perfect way to celebrate the season, Wreck the Halls will be available on draft and in 22oz bottles in early November through December. ABV 6.5%, IBU 68.
Session Fest is Full Sail’s Session holiday beer that comes in a stubby little bottle, makes a great stocking stuffer, and is the perfect beer to leave by the fireplace for Santa or Santa’s little helpers. According to Full Sail Executive Brewmaster, Jamie Emmerson, “Session Fest is a Czech-style strong lager (gotta love the Czechs!) called polotmavé or literally “light dark or semi-dark.” Brewed with 2 Row Pale malt, Munich malt, Caramel malt and Wheat malt, and hopped with a blend of Glaciers and Cascades, Session Fest has a medium-to-full body balancing candy caramel and full malt flavors that are underscored by a spicy hoppiness that provides a nice perfume with citrus and pine overtones and a long clean finish. Session Fest will be available in 12 packs from October through December. 6.2% ABV 26 IBU.
And this year, Full Sail introduces their new holiday beer for their Limited Edition Lager series – LTD 06. LTD means limited edition, but according to Full Sail’s Founder and CEO, Irene Firmat, at Full Sail it means something even more: Live the Dream. “We’ve been living out our dream: brewing beer, our own way, in one of the most beautiful places on earth. We dedicate our LTD Series to everyone who’s living the dream, whatever that dream might be. Our passion for brewing beer was born from our experiences travelling throughout Europe and enjoying the richness of the brewing heritage of great lager beer styles. So with each LTD beer, we create our own individual passport back to these wonderful beer experiences showcasing an original lager recipe available only for a limited time.” LTD 06, a black bock, is lush and full bodied with hints of roast, coffee, and chocolate in the aroma followed by flavors of caramel and figs with a long creamy smooth finish. LTD 06 is brewed as a Czech style Cerné Speciální with 2 row Pale, Munich, Caramel, and Chocolate Malts and hopped with Santiam and Perle hops. LTD 06 will be available in 6 packs and on draft from October through December. ABV 7.0% IBU 34.
“We have crafted all our beers to be great guests at your holiday celebrations and they are a wonderful addition to every holiday meal. All Full Sail beers share balance and nuance and help to inspire the camaraderie of the holidays. So come celebrate the holidays with us. Cheers from the Full Sail Crew!” added Firmat.

Bridgeport Brewing's "Enchanted" New Beer

Bridgeport Brewing's "Enchanted" New Beer:

For fans of barrel-aged and/or fruit beers, Bridgeport's newest may be worth seeking out. Enchanted is a new, very limited barrel-aged version of Stumptown Tart from 2010. Aged for 2 years in oak barrels, Bridgeport calls it a Framboise. I wouldn't go that far, as the base beer is no Lambic, but I can see 2 years on wood treating this beer well.

Note the new packaging design for Enchanted, reminiscent of the screen printed designs on the new Hopworks Abbey line of bottles for its stylistic but sparse imagery. I wonder if this will be the first of a new reserve series from Bridgeport? Bottles will be available only in Oregon.

“This is a special one for our team,” commented Brewmaster Jeff Edgerton. “The 2010 Stumptown Tart was a favorite not only amongst our loyal BridgePort fans – but also amongst our brewers. The only way to up the ante on that beer was to let it age in oak barrels for two years. The result is something surprising and pretty unforgettable.”
