Deschutes Brewery update: 15% growth, new tanks, Fresh Squeezed IPA, Class of ’88
Deschutes Brewery update: 15% growth, new tanks, Fresh Squeezed IPA, Class of ’88:
(Bend, OR) – BeerPulse caught up with Deschutes Brewery Digital Marketing Manager, Jason Randles, on Friday to chat about the brewery’s foray into cans. You can get all the info you need on Mirror Pond Pale Ale cans there. We also asked Randles about production, capacity and new beers.
CAPACITY
Deschutes produced just over 252,000 barrels in 2012, up ~15% from 2011, and is at capacity, says Randles. The addition of five 1,300-barrel tanks at the end of April will fix that, taking the brewery up to 430,000 barrels of annual capacity. This is the second set of tanks that will fit into a ten-tank cradle with the other five having gone into operation last year.
Deschutes can increase output beyond 430k/year “with a lot of work” but the new tanks provide some cushion for a few years. Packaging will eventually transition over to a warehouse at the Bend facility, opening up opportunities to grow capacity again.
With the capacity boost, Deschutes will add “at least one state” in the back half of the year. The team was very pleased with the Illinois launch with Wirtz in January. Inversion IPA should be making its way to that market now.
While fashionable over the last year, Randles notes that Deschutes is not looking to open a second brewery.
CONTRACTING
Deschutes considers contracting as a logical next step to eventually getting its beers out to the East Coast and the canning partnership with Cold Spring is the first move. Illinois was the first state the brewery entered East of the Mississippi and it has ambitions to go further.
“Shipping beer from Bend to the East Coast and Midwest- like other breweries, we are looking at other ways to deliver fresh beer to those fans. Part of it is looking for that contract brewer out there. We’ve been looking for years but haven’t got there yet.”
DESCHUTES RIVER ALE
Building on the successful 2012 launch of Deschutes Chainbreaker White IPA (#1 new craft beer in supermarkets), Deschutes introduced River Ale this month. A new year-round beer, River Ale hit the market on March 4th, primarily in independent shops and small chains. It is still very early though Randles says, “reception has been good.” There are a few markets where it may not appear until May like Missouri and Minnesota. It had yet to make it to Kansas as of late last week.
DESCHUTES CLASS OF ’88 BARLEYWINE
Here is a quick primer for the uninformed on this 25th anniversary project. Deschutes is looking at the week of April 8th for the first release. The company is coordinating with collaboration partners, Rogue Ales and North Coast, on timing for the respective versions.
DESCHUTES FRESH SQUEEZED IPA
Deschutes will replace its spring offering in the high-end 22 oz. Bond Street Series, Hop in the Dark, with Fresh-Squeezed IPA. Like so many popular IPAs in the modern era, this one focuses on Citra hops. The beer description reads, “Three types of malt, one type of bittering hop and a whole lot of Citra hops.” The label artwork has been submitted to the TTB so we will see it soon though Randles notes there is a subsequent label still to come that will be the final version.
DESCHUTES ARMORY XPA
Armory XPA launched across Deschutes’ footprint earlier this year, only on draft. “It is another one of those beers that was developed out of the Portland Pub and kind of became the signature beer there.”

Rogue Farms Honey Kölsch added as newest addition to Rogue Ales’ lineup
Rogue Farms Honey Kölsch added as newest addition to Rogue Ales’ lineup:
(Newport, OR) – Rogue Ales recently released its 2013 schedule.
We are already a couple months in and Rogue released five rotational beers this winter.
Up next are XS 2IPA and MoM’s Hefeweizen in April followed by American Amber Ale and Dad’s Little Helper Black IPA in May.
The only new introduction listed on the schedule is “Rogue Farms Honey Kölsch,” presumably part of the “Chatoe Rogue” series. That beer will debut in July.
That said, Rogue is part of a collaboration with Deschutes and North Coast that will yield three different bottled barleywines. One of those will be brewed out of Rogue’s facility.
And who knows, maybe we will finally see Beard Beer.
Check out the full schedule.

U.S. craft brewers sell $10.2 billion in beer in 2012, dollar market share hits 10%
U.S. craft brewers sell $10.2 billion in beer in 2012, dollar market share hits 10%:
Press Release:
(Boulder, CO) – The Brewers Association (BA), the trade association representing small and independent American brewers, today released 2012 data on U.S. craft brewing¹ growth. In a year when the total U.S. beer market grew by one percent, craft brewers saw a 15 percent rise in volume² and a 17 percent increase in dollar growth, representing a total barrel increase of almost 1.8 million.
With production at 13,235,917 barrels in 2012, craft brewers reached 6.5 percent volume of the total U.S. beer market, up from 5.7 percent the previous year. Additionally, craft dollar share of the total U.S. beer market reached 10.2 percent in 2012, as retail dollar value from craft brewers was estimated at $10.2 billion, up from $8.7 billion in 2011.
“Beer is a $99 billion industry to which craft brewers are making a significant contribution, with retail sales share hitting double digits for the first time in 2012,” said Paul Gatza, director, Brewers Association. “Small and independent brewers are consistently innovating and producing high quality, flavor-forward craft brewed beer. Americans are not only responding to greater access to these products, but also to the stories and people behind them.”
In 2012, there was an 18 percent increase in the number of U.S. operating breweries, with the total count reaching 2,403. The count includes 409 new brewery openings and only 43 closings. Small breweries created an estimated 4,857 more jobs during the year, employing 108,440 workers, compared to 103,583 the year prior.
“On average, we are seeing slightly more than one craft brewery per day opening somewhere in the U.S., and we anticipate even more in the coming year. There is clearly a thirst in the marketplace for craft brewed beer, as indicated by the continued growth year after year,” added Gatza. “These small breweries are doing great things for their local communities, the greater community of craft brewers, our food arts culture and the overall economy.”
Note: Numbers are preliminary. A more extensive analysis will be released during the Craft Brewers Conference in Washington, D.C. from March 26-29. The full 2012 industry analysis will be published in the May/June 2013 issue of The New Brewer, highlighting regional trends and sales by individual breweries.
¹The definition of a craft brewer as stated by the Brewers Association: An American craft brewer is small, independent, and traditional. Small: Annual production of beer less than 6 million barrels. Beer production is attributed to a brewer according to the rules of alternating proprietorships. Flavored malt beverages are not considered beer for purposes of this definition. Independent: Less than 25 percent of the craft brewery is owned or controlled (or equivalent economic interest) by an alcoholic beverage industry member who is not themselves a craft brewer.
Traditional: A brewer who has either an all malt flagship (the beer which represents the greatest volume among that brewers brands) or has at least 50 percent of its volume in either all malt beers or in beers which use adjuncts to enhance rather than lighten flavor.
² Volume by craft brewers represent total taxable production.
