Stone Brewing Co-Founder and CEO, Greg Koch, on beer philosophy:

An exploratory visit to Stone Brewing Co., and an in-depth interview with its CEO, co-founder & mastermind Greg Koch. We see the brewery in action and then sit down for a long talk with Greg in the Stone Brewery World Bistro and Gardens.
Only newsworthy piece that I gleaned is that he likes the idea of doing Saison du BUFF every couple years.

Mt Hood Brewing Ice Axe IPA now in bottles

Mt Hood Brewing Ice Axe IPA now in bottles:

Mt. Hood Brewing Company has for the first time bottled its flagship beer, the Ice Axe India Pale Ale. It seems like I have rarely ever seen this beer around Portland in recent years though it used to be many a pubs staple. I still look forward to the occasional pint of their Hogsback Oatmeal Stout that is always on cask at the Horse Brass.

Bottling their beer for the first time in 22's could signify a shift with the brewery to get their beer more out there. Bottles of Ice Axe IPA will initially only be available exclusively at select Portland-area retailers Zupan’s Markets and Made in Oregon. Not sure what the exclusivity nets them, perhaps higher profit margins, better shelf space or simply a slow rollout of their bottlesto meet demand.
“We’re excited to be one of two retailers selling the exclusive Ice Axe India Pale Ale, a beer with a strong following and unique flavor profile,” said President Mike Zupan. “This beer is local, just like we are, and we know our customers will appreciate finding this exceptional ale at all four of our Zupan’s Markets locations.”

Ice Axe India Pale Ale is Mt. Hood Brewing Company’s flagship beer and is available in 22 oz. bottles for $5.99. It is an aggressively hopped beer with a rich and satisfying flavor profile.
Tasting Notes:
Well balanced to allow the caramel of the malts to be up front with the subtle finish of hops added during the 120 minute boil.

Ingredients:
Malts:  Crystal, Munich, 2-Row Pale, Malted Wheat
Hops:   Centennial, Mt. Hood, Magnum, Golding, Willamette
Profile:
IBU:    60
ABV:   5.7 percent

“Because all of the ingredients in our beers are from the Pacific Northwest, it’s important for us to share them with people who appreciate our roots,” said Tom Rydzewski, Head Brewer at Mt. Hood Brewing Company. “Zupan’s Markets prioritize quality, fresh, local products and we’re happy to partner with them on this exciting venture."

About Mt. Hood Brewing Company
Utilizing the freshest, locally-produced ingredients and Mt. Hood's pure glacial water, Mt. Hood Brewing Company head brewers Tom Rydzewski and Jeff McAllester produce an exciting line up of ales for every palate. Located on the 1st floor of the Ice Axe Grill, the brewery is in the center of High Cascade Mountain action. Founded in 1991, the brewer produces eight distinctive ales through the marriage of pure glacial water and Pacific Northwest grown barley and hops. Oregonians can also find these ales on draft in restaurants and pubs throughout the state. For more information, visit: http://www.iceaxegrill.com/.

Full Sail Clinton’s Wertzbier joins Brewer’s Share series

Full Sail Clinton’s Wertzbier joins Brewer’s Share series:
Full Sail Clinton’s WertzbierPress Release:
(Hood River, OR) – To celebrate Oregon Craft Beer Month, Full Sail Brewing will release a new beer in their Brewer’s Share Experimental line up: Clinton’s Wertzbier brewed by Brewer Clinton Wertzbaugher.
Wertzbier is a Rauchbier which is a traditional German beer style using smoked barley malt. In fact, rauch means smoke in German. Used modestly in this recipe, the smoked malt imparts a delicate smoky character to Wertzbier. Munich malt complements with a pleasant sweetness. At 5.6% ABV and 17.5 IBU, this lager has a light body with a spicy hop nose from Czech Saaz hops, and finishes clean and crisp with a hint of smoke.
“I made this beer to celebrate the good times of summer. Two of my favorite things about the season are campfires and barbeques with friends. Since I can’t always be around a glowing fire with buddies, I wanted to brew a Rauchbier to remind me of these good times. In just a sip, the smokiness transforms my bar stool into a camp chair. As a summer beer, it is brewed lighter in alcohol and less smoky than a traditional Rauchbier. I used my favorite hops, Saaz and Crystal, and balanced it with Smoked, Munich and pale 2 Row malts. It makes for a unique and easy-going summer companion,” said Wertzbaugher.
Full Sail has scheduled two “Meet the Brewer and the Beer” events to showcase this new beer. The first Meet Brewer and the Beer event will be at Full Sail at Riverplace in Portland, Tuesday, July 10th from 5:00 – 6:30PM. The second is at the Full Sail Tasting Room and Pub in Hood River, on Thursday, July 12th from 5:00 to 6:30PM. Join the Full Sail crew to celebrate and toast a pint of the new brew.
With each Brewer’s Share series beer, Full Sail picks a local charity to receive a portion of the proceeds from the sale of the beer. Clinton has chosen to support the Oregon Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and every keg of Clinton’s Wertzbier benefits this organization. The National MS Society funds more MS research, provides more services to individuals with MS, offers more professional education and furthers more advocacy efforts than any other MS organization in the world.

The Brewer’s Share series is a line-up of small batch draft beers where each Full Sailor takes a turn hand-crafting their own single batch recipe and a portion of the proceeds benefit a local charity of their choosing. Full Sail’s Brewer’s Share Experimental beers will only be available on tap at Full Sail’s Tasting Room and Pub in Hood River, Oregon, and at Full Sail’s Brewery at Riverplace, in Portland, Oregon. Growlers to go are available. The next Brewer’s Share Experimental will be brewed by Brewer Gavin Lord and is expected in late September.
In recognition of the positive impact that Oregon craft brewers have made to our communities, the entire month of July has been designated by the Governor as Oregon Craft Beer Month. “It is an honor to brew a beer for Oregon Craft Beer Month with one of my own recipes,” added Wertzbaugher.

6th annual Puckerfest Event's and Beer List Revealed

6th annual Puckerfest Event's and Beer List Revealed:
Breaking news on this 4th of July. Belmont Station has revealed the schedule and details of the 6th Annual Puckerfest taking place Friday July 13 – Thursday July 20 noon – 11PM Daily. From humble beginnings Puckerfest has become the preeminent sour beer fest in Oregon with up to 16 sour and wild yeast beers on tap daily. I remember working at the bier cafe during the first annual Puckerfest and seeing less people than on what a regular day of business there would be like today. At that point sour beers were practically unheard of and Belmont Station had only 4 taps to rotate through them. Anyway without further ado here is the event and beer list...
