Oregon beer production grows 7.5% percent in 2011 to all-time high

Oregon beer production grows 7.5% percent in 2011 to all-time high:
oregon-brewers-guild-logoPress Release:
(Portland, OR) – The Oregon Brewers Guild announced today that Oregon’s breweries crafted 1,168,000 barrels of beer (or roughly 290 million pints) during 2011, a 7.5 percent increase from the previous year. Despite overall weak employment figures for the year in Oregon, the state’s brewing companies added more than 600 jobs in 2011 and directly employed more than 5,500 people.
“Increasing production by 7.5 percent simply means more jobs,” said Brian Butenschoen, Executive Director of the Oregon Brewers Guild. “When an increased number of Oregonians choose Oregon beer over other options, we need more farmers to grow hops and barley, brewers buy more equipment, open breweries, and hire new employees.”
In addition to strengthening the local economy, Oregon’s 100 plus brewing companies donated product and dollars to community non-profits in 2011 equaling more than $1.45 million. Retail sales of Oregon-made beer sold in the state totaled approximately $270 million in 2011. In total, the brewing industry contributes $2.44 billion to the state’s economy and employs more than 25,000 people directly and indirectly.
Oregon currently has 110 brewing companies operating 145 brewing facilities in 58 cities across the state. Portland,

Oregon currently has 49 breweries within its city limits, more than any other city in the world.
Roughly 15.8 percent of the 2.712 million barrels of all beer – both bottled and draft – consumed in the state were made in Oregon. For draft beer, that percentage is even higher, with Oregon breweries producing an estimated 42.8 percent of all draft beer consumed in the state. Both of these numbers are the highest for any state in the United States and the 2011 numbers broke previous records set in 2010. Oregonians consumed 10.7 percent more Oregon craft beer over last year, equaling 429,000 barrels. Craft beer production in the U.S. grew 13 percent in 2011 and now represents 5.7 percent of the total volume of beer brewed in the United States.
“I have to warn people that this next information set is intended for those who really, really love beer stats,” said Butenschoen. “In Oregon, craft beer has been the largest beer category for the last 20 months – a first in U.S. history – and Oregon continues to lead the country in the percentage of dollars spent on craft beer. In fact, for the week ending 12/25/11, 40 percent of dollars spent on beer in Portland supermarkets was on craft beer, and that’s also a first in U.S. history.” (statistics provided by SymphonyIRI Group)
The Oregon Brewers Guild is Oregon’s non-profit trade association for the state’s independent breweries. The Guild comprises 89 brewing companies,60 associate or supplier members and more than 3,200 enthusiast members or S.N.O.B.s (Supporters of Native Oregon Beer). Sierra Nevada Beer Camp Series variety pack beers revealed

Sierra Nevada Beer Camp Series variety pack beers revealed:
beer camp crop
(Chico, CA) – Sierra Nevada Brewing Company got label approval this week for the four beers it will be putting in the 2012 Beer Camp Variety Pack.
Sierra Nevada debuted the pack last May and it will return later this year with a new lineup of beers. Product Development Manager, Bill Manley, told BeerPulse back in March that the pack was tentatively slated for August release.
Variety packs are among the hot packages in craft beer. Variety packs ranked fourth behind seasonals, IPAs and Pale Ales in terms of sales in supermarkets as of the end of 2011, according to Symphony IRI Group data.
Here are the four beers that will be featured this year:
Sierra Nevada Oatmeal Stout (Beer Camp #45) – This big oatmeal stout is midnight black in color-with a big roasty, mocha-like aroma. It has a silky body from the use of rolled oats, and a round and lasting finish. Perfect as an after-dinner treat.
Sierra Nevada Imperial Red Ale (Beer Camp #65) – This Imperial Red Ale takes the intense hop profile found in a traditional double IPA and turns up the malt. It has big aromatic hop notes of grapefruit, peach and melon – balanced by a smooth and surprisingly robust malt body.
Sierra Nevada Imperial Pilsner (Beer Camp #43) – Packing a big hop-forward punch and bright crisp finish, this golden pilsner features a hearty dose of “sticky,” resinous Crystal and Pacifica dry hops, which balance the light-bodied yet complex malt backbone.
Sierra Nevada Floral IPA (Beer Camp #53) – This unique take on the traditional IPA style pairs the bold and intense aromas of whole-cone hop “flowers” with aromatic natural rose hips and petals for complex aromas and unexpected flavors.

Rogue Ales to create beer using yeast from brewmaster’s beard follicles

Rogue Ales to create beer using yeast from brewmaster’s beard follicles:
maier beard crop
Press Release:
(Newport, OR) – Columbus may have discovered America but Brewmaster, John Maier, has discovered a new wild yeast that was developed from his old growth beard.
In cooperation with White Labs, samples were collected from Rogue Ales‘ hopyard and sent to White Labs for culture and testing. Sadly, all three samples proved incapable of producing a yeast suitable for brewing.
As a joke, nine beard follicles were carefully cut from the beard of Rogue brewmaster, John Maier. The follicles were placed in a petri dish and sent in for testing.
To the shock of the experts at White Labs, the beard samples had produced a yeast strain that was perfect for use in brewing. Additional testing was conducted and confirmed that the yeast strain was not Rogue’s yeast. White Labs’ Chris White said, “we were shocked and thrilled with this remarkable discovery.”
John has been growing his beard continuously since 1978 and he has claimed that he will never cut it off. When told of the discovery, John said simply, “It was in front of me the whole time and it only took two centuries and five decades to grow.”
The beard yeast is currently being used in test brews to determine the perfect style and yeast combination. The beard beer, New Crustacean, will be released in early 2013.
Rogue Ales and Spirits is dedicated to saving the terroir of Oregon hops, barley and rye, by growing our own, one acre at a time.
